How to lay stepping stones in area wherw grass is cut

I have a small area leading up to our cement patio and I would love to add about 5-6 stepping stones. How do I add them properly since this is also an area where I cut the grass?

Dig out for them and inset them flush with the surface of the fill. You can mow right over them.

Was this a trick question?

Nope, actually I'll post a pic of the area. Let me know how you would arrange them. In the pic you will see square stones around the patio in the mulch. I'm going to take those out and use those and add some more if needed. I was thinking about spacing them out a bit further like 2 ft apart...is that too far apart?

Stretch out a tape measure on the ground. Then walk normally beside it and note the average length of your stride. THAT is where you would place/space/center the stones.

Are you sure these aren't trick questions?

17-18” is a comfortable step for most humans.

Just lay them out on the ground and adjust until you’re comfortable with them, then brake out the shovel.

Is it wise to pour some sand under the stones?

You certainly can, the sand will make it easier to get a flat base. If I was just laying a few in my yard I don’t know that I’d go buy any sand though.

I used sand under the stones I set for a sidewalk to a garden area and it didn't work out that great. The sand allowed me to set the rocks easier, but they move some when I run the tractor over them. The rocks I set for hop scotch 3 years ago are still in the ground and still being used by my granddaughter.
