How do I figure out what lives under my lawn?

There's a hole about 2" in diameter on my lawn about 2' from the flower bed. inside the flowerbed there is another one - I had honestly forgot about it since I obviously don't spend much time on the lawn these days.

The other day I found hole #3 - this one is right next to one of the piers of my deck - now I'm mad!

I initially thought "moles" but then realized there's no dirt "hill" on the lawn next to the holes, literally just the hole with nothing around it.

What can make holes like this? And ........ where does the dirt go??????????

In my neck of the woods, that would most likely be a chipmunk, otherwise known as a ground squirrel in some parts. They always seem to have one hole that is more concealed, and one in the open for when they need a quick place to get to while frolicking around the yard.

How do I figure out what lives under my lawn?

Groundhogs might be around in your part of the World. I once found a family living high under a garage. French wine, custom furniture, hookers, cable tv, stereo and cigars in a living space hollowed out almost the entire dimensions of the space. Little holes for ingress/egress like you describe outside.

They had been at it so long we had to demolish the garage floor, fill in the cavity, and start over. I have no idea where the dirt went as they made their home.

Sdsester, those groundhogs must have been spending everything they had on wine, cigars, and other vices, and nothing on food. Our groundhogs would never fit down a 2" hole.

Like amphetamines

I don't think there would be ANY groundhog fitting down a 2 in hole.

Ayuh,.... 'round here, Chipmunks live in the 2" holes in the ground, 'n Woodchucks live in holes 'bout 6" across...

Either way,...
Dump a container of D-con rat pellets down the hole,...
It usually get's rid of 'em...

This is in CT, not Denmark - but it seems everyone figured that out already.

Well, I do see chipmunks very often zip across the yard. So these things like to dig too huh?

Do mole traps work for these things or should I try the mothball or bubblegum method?

Ayuh,... I kinda doubt the mole traps'll work,...

as for the mothballs or bubblegum,..??
Are ya trying to piss 'em off, or kill 'em,..??

Like I said before, D-con rat pellets dumped down their holes will take care of the Problem...

I suppose; certainly nothing to bury or toss in the swamp that way.

I live in the center of town, not sure what you can really pull off there as far as "things that make projectiles fly". Anyways.. I got the goods, will report back with my findings.

There's a hole about 2" in diameter ( from the OP)
