Help Me Grow Grass
So last summer I had no grass, it was all weeds and crabgrass. So in September we had all the weeds killed with roundup, scalped it down as low as we could, then proceeded to overseed the lawn. This overseeding process included cutting rows about an inch deep in the ground and then having the seeds spread into the rows. After all that we had a significant amount of grass growing before winter came around. Although, the rows didn't appear to spread as much as I thought they would.
Now with spring approaching, what is the first process to ensure healthy grass and hopefully see a fuller lawn this summer? I'm thinking some combination of fertiliser and weed controller?
Any help would be awesome. I'm very lost here. Thanks!
It somewhat depends on what part of the country you are in. I was born and raised in Colorado, so when I moved to Georgia all the crazy stuff they do out here baffled me.
Anyway, I am in a similar situation. Being in GA, I laid down the pre-emergant in the Fall hoping to stop weeds from germinating. Now in spring, I pulled / raked up leftover or sprouting weeds. Raked the soil to create a fairly loose top layer. Laid down starter fertilizer and fescue seed. I then coated the whole area with a light layer of wheat straw. I heard (being from CO and not really understanding) that this helps keep birds off, keeps the seed from washing out, and holds in moisture. I water twice a day for 20 minutes at 7AM and 4PM.
I dont know if I am doing it "right", but we will see in a couple weeks.
I'm in Massachusetts. That's good advice thanks very much.
I think I'll also give the yard a good raking sometime soon and then hit it with some fertilizer, weed control, and crabgrass preventer. Hopefully this does the job. I did nothing last year and paid the price for it.
