Help with grass please

What type of grass is this? I have been told that it is watergrass and will need to be dug out. The reason I ask is they redid the road and sewer system in front of my house last year and destroyed the first four feet of my yard. My plan is to till it all up and start from scratch but will dig these out first if necessary. Thanks in advance.

Not certain what it is but if it was a public works project they probably just sprinkled as cheap contractor seed mix as they could possibly buy and hoped for something green. It will not take you that long to spray or just rototill it and remove it. You might as well start everything from scratch and not fight it.

Now is a great time to buy turf seed because real nurseries, old fashioned garden centers and neighborhood hardware stores will have nice, fresh seed in bulk and you can mix your own blend specific to your needs for chimp change.

I posted a fairly detailed list of procedures today for prepping the soil for seed if you need it. Look for the thread entitled "grass clippings" or something like that near this thread.

If you have not worked with a rototiller before, think about renting one of the heavy monsters with rear tines. It is a bit of a challenge to get them started in place but they will not bounce around like the light weight ones and will do a better job for you and be easier on your back!

You do know where shallow buried phone and cable utilities are right? Not under where you will be tilling?

Thanks for the response. Good point bringing up underground utilities. As far as I can tell it is all run to the back of the house. I will probably call iowa 1 call or whatever it is and have them come out and mark it. I have used a front tine tiller before which was some work and have always heard that rear tines are much easier. Considering the amount that I will be tilling I will def head out and rent one. I will also check out your link.
