is it a grass or is it a weed?

This is is more then half my lawn and I'm not sure if it's really grass or just a weed that looks decent when it's cut. It grows crazy fast so it looks bad in a week and it just doesn't look like grass when it grows and has the tips as shown in the picture. So is it grass? if so what kind is it? it seems to spread as fast as a weed which is kind of annoying and I'm planning on re-seeding a lot of my lawn this fall so I want to know what this is.

*edit* this picture is of a weeks worth of growth

many thanks!

You can take a sample to a professional garden center they should be able to identify it.

Cool

is it a grass or is it a weed?

The plant is a "grass" - but it's definitely not something you want in your yard instead of grass. It's called "Japanese stilt grass." The plant will grow up tall like a foot or a foot and a half, and then if you cut it with a mower all the leaves will be gone. It also performs very poorly in conditions with less water. I have had it grow up all nice and green and then die off all at once and turn brown.

I would suggest pulling it out and replacing with grass seed ...

I have the same stuff in my yard. I was wondering the same thing. I always kind of thought it was a weed?

Technically, a "weed" is any plant growing where you don't want it to.

stacieg was right, it's japanese stilt grass and pulls out easy. Gunna let the grass grow long so I can pull it easier. I put another post up asking if my method planning is good.

Why start another thread? You should keep all of this information in one thread to make it easier to follow.

plan for tackling japanese stalk grass in Maryland

Why don't you have a Moderator delete that other thread and keep everything here?

some parts I can't use roundup because I'm a bit concerned about the plants nearby and I don't want to cause problems. I'll probably go back and use roundup on some of the remaining problems and these other plants I can't get rid of.

on the early advice, please feel free to comment on my plan moving forward...

so, my plan for tackling my japanese stalk grass is to let it grow up for the next 3-4 weeks. End of August pull it up and spray treat the remaining lawn blights and plant tall fescue, kentucky bluegrass, and fine fescue throughout the lawn (bluegrass in full, tall in the middle, fine in the shade) in the 2nd week of September.

Does that sound about right? Can I plant grass in the second week of september? how long do I need to wait until I can plant cool season grass? how long is needed to wait before the spot treating to the planting of new grass?

Thanks for the help!
