grass vs. mulch around french drains?

Hey all - I have what I believe to be French drains near by back patio. They are just 2 separate 12 inch square green plastic grates right in the grass. There is a black box in the ground, and 8 inch corregated black piping runs off about 75-100 feet to a drainage ditch in my backyard. The appear to work great.

However, they are in a shady spot, so the grass never really comes in too well in this area. And it's in a hard spot to mow. So rather than fight that, Ifigured I could kill the grass and just mulch the area. But is there any reason why I might not want to do this?

You could wind up with a lot of mulch in the drain which could create a clog.

Besides that, mulch will break down over time and have to be replaced. Great for the soil, but if you're not planting in it, it's sort of a waste. What about gravel?

If it isn't that big I would turn it into a flower bed. Your right no reason fighting nature if drainage has already been attempted.
