Grass Seed

You can plant it anytime you want. Your results will depend on when that is.

Grass Seed

The guy at the local feed store sold me rye grass due to the lateness of the season here in upstate NY but that was almost two weeks ago. It is growing but don't know for how much longer. You are best off to go to a place like that to get advice and you can buy only as much as you need. Lowes sells large bags and their gardening folks admittedly don't know much about it.

It is impossible to answer your question without knowing:
1. Where you are.
2. What grass you want to plant.
