grass seed
We have Old English Mastiffs. Our back yard is pretty much a mud lot. We want to plant grass seed but have no idea what to plant. It must be good for high traffic, grows fast and is harty. What should we use?

I am not an expert, but there is no answer for this. It is going to depend on a lot of factors. First being - where are you? Different grasses grow in different parts of the country. Your soil will matter too: is it well-drained or moist, clay, rock, sand? How is the sunlight in your yard - full sun, part sun, full shade?

Dogs and grass just don't mix. I know this is not what you want to hear but its the truth. Gravel is your best bet.

Mastiffs? Plural?

Yeah that is a tough one. I dont know any grass that wears well when multiple 180lb animals lumber around on it.

How big is your yard?

I had a neighbor who had some beefy dobermans a long time ago. He put up a temp fence around a section he wanted to seed to keep them off. After a few months the grass was set and he let the dogs in the area, but when they dogs wore a path running up and down the fence line to "check things out" there was nothing he could do. You might be able to section off part of your lawn to see if that works. Maybe put down sod instead of seed? (but if the dogs ruin that you will be out more $)
