Grass problems

I have a couple bare patches in my yard that are dried out and light brown. Is it just dry rot or something more serious? I have no idea. Should I do the sod myself?

Awfully hard to tell without some pictures. It could be anything from fungus to just a dry summer.

That said, I'm a big believer in sowing grass seed, rather than sodding. Far more economical, and (usually) better long-term results.

Could be insects like grubs. You should remedy whatever it is before replanting. And, it is so hot and dry right now I would postpone planting new seed.
