Ayuh,... Up to 50 or 75 yards, a .22 works pretty good,...
From 75 out to a few hundred yards, I prefer my .22/.250....

Maybe plastic explosive in the shape of other woodland creatures?

My buddy found a guy on craigslist that comes out and gasses the little suckers. I think he said its some type of tablet that goes in the gopher hole then he runs a bit of water in there and covers the hole with dirt.

Hey Eddie33. Ken here with The Home Depot in the Chicago area. Gassing them, as Shane1 talked about, is the way to go.There are those battery-powered sonic gopher stakes, but they only work if conditions are just right. Get the Revenge Rodent Smoke Bomb from your garden center. Here is what I’m talking about.

The first thing to do is find all the open gopher holes in your yard and cover them all up except the one you are going to work with. Take out the bomb and hold it with the fuse away from you. Light the fuse, being careful not to breathe the vapors. Stick it fuse first into the hole as far as you can and cover up the hole. The gas should waft through the tunnels and solve your problem.
I hope that helps and keep me posted on how it goes. Take care.
