gate for chain link fence

Hi

My first time here.

I would like to install a gate in my backyard chain link fence so I can park in the back. This would give my wife safer, quicker access to the house.

But I don't know where to start, other than just start cutting the fence. I would like to have a gate wide enough to drive through and one that could open with a control like a garage door. My local "box stores" don't really carry gates like this and thy referred me to contractors. But I would rathrer DIY and save a little.

Thanks - David

One quick point about chain link, you don't need to cut it. Just unwind a spiral, after bending the top and bottom pieces over.

good point - thanks - I am thinking about using the section of fence I take out for the body of the gate and some pipe or whatever for supports at the top bottom and diagonal. Then I would need a few posts to reattach the fence. Does this sound reasonable?

You can use angle iron for making the gate, and get a couple of posts from a fencing supplier.

OK - I guess angleiorn is cheaper than pipe. But I am not sure how to attach the fencing to the angleiorn - maybe drill holes in it and tie the fence with heavy wire - not sure about that part...

Thats one way to do it.

Keep an eye on craigslist, I see people trying to get rid of chain link stuff all the time
