I've got water accumulating around a portion of the house, and think a french drain may be the answer. Ala "Ask the Builder" advice here:

I'm curious if people think its possible to install a french drain too close to the house? The portion of the house that could use a french drain has a sidewalk around it. Most of the water accumulates between the sidewalk and the house. During hard rains, it puddles. There are about 2.5 feet between the two.

What is the harm of a french drain being 2 feet from the house? Vs. 4-6?

No problem having it close to the house provided that water does not remain in it. (Water must eventually drain downhill and onto the ground surface well away from the house or must drain into a pit with a sump pump.)

I think as long as it's designed to drain properly you shouldn't have a problem. We had one installed from the inside and they dug about 18 inches in. I just saw this other info on this topic:
