What do you think a sub-base is and how it different from base in your application?

Well this is what I did, I dug the clay out and put in 6 inches of 1a stone compacted in 2 lifts wetting it down as I vibe plated it, then a sand leveler but I have about 5-6 inches of sand not compacted. Im laying flagstone some of which is upwards of 2 inches or so thick some only an inch. Also some of these wiegh 50 pounds or so but most are smaller. Obviously this is my first patio job. Everything Ive seen on the internet tells me I need at least 2 inches of sand but I'm concerned that I have too much and it will settle. I don't want to go through this again being the patio is 19x16. I have 1/3 of it layed before this concern registered in my head. Am I worring too much or do I need to start over?

5" of sand is too much. 1-2" is ok- sand does not compact well, so you will get settling. I like a 1" sand bed for pavers, but when using flagstone, I prefer screenings/stone dust.
