fire pit lava rock
Building a 36" diameter, 14" high natural gas fire pit. The fire feature I'm putting in is a round 30" ring, with 2" of reflective glass as the top surface layer of the pit (vs. having a log set).
The company recommended the 2" of glass at a cost of approx $500, and then filler for the remaining 12" below using lava rock. Every inch of filler requires 30 lbs of lava rock. I will need 360 lbs of lava rock to fill the 12" and it will cost $360.
My question: Why can't I use some kind of gravel / pebble rock for all or most the 12" of fill (at least 10" as that's about where the burner will sit)???..... and then it will be a fraction of the cost.
Doesn't really answer your question, but if you're located near Wisconsin, I have all the lava rock you could want, for free :) I just want it out of my yard...
When using other rocks they can hest up and pop out of the pit also can restrict gas flow
