Fertilizers & crabgrass

Last summer we were invaded by crabgrass. I live in NH, and soil is acidic. I have to put down seed in part of the yard, but I also need to put down something to stop the crabgrass from coming back. I know the seed won't grow if I put both down at the same time. Any suggestions on how to get grass to grow and stop the weeds?

I was having the same problem. I ended up having a company come and spray, they do 6 applications a year. I think i'll cut it back to 3 this year. The cost wasnt much more than if i'd done it myself. Might want to consider looking into that.

Moss grows in acidic soil. Raise the Ph with limestone.Buy a soil testing kit to know how much to put down.

Do you have a local ag extension coop there? They should do the pH test for free, AND they will give good local advice!

Not sure if this helps but atrazine will stoop germination of grass seed. Not sure if they banned atrazine.......

Get the grass growing first. That will be the most important thing to do in the short term. Mow it high and keep it watered. Next year, a pre-emergent crabgrass application should be started. The best defense against weeds is a thick lawn! Application of the crabgrass preventer in the other areas of the lawn can certainly help with the spread into your newly seeded area but absolutely, do not allow it to get into the area where you are seeding. You are right on with your statement that it will completely prevent germination.

Crabgrass prevention must be applied early in the spring. As soon as you see little weeds popping up in the joints of sidewalks and driveways, it is time. If you wait too long, you will miss your window. We had this same problem in Iowa. We seeded grass one year, and then had to wait until the following spring to deal with the crabgrass.
