edgers, the purpose

Living in Fla. with no irrigation I have sparse grass. I do have a long sidewalk and drive. The edges aren't quite a neat as I'd like so I'm considering renting an edger.

For some weird reason there's a slight pileup of soil/sand next to the concrete.

Is an edger more to trim lush grass neatly, or will it dig a little trench for me, along the concrete? I'm rushed for time before a house warming so won't rent one if it isn't worth the trouble. My battery weedeater does a decent job of keeping the edges presentable.

You might be better off just buying one of these.

Both. And the manual one kwikfish linked to will accomplish the job.

thanks for the input.

25 yrs ago I used to do it by hand, with a flat shovel. I'm hoping those days are behind me and just wanted to zip along quickly with something electric (or gas).

When I hose off the walk and drive I don't like dirt washing back onto the concrete. I think I'll skip it for now, but later will try and edger just so I know.
