Don't have a green thumb! Need advice on house plants?

We're getting ready to re-plant some house plants that we just bought. I've heard/read some things about drilling holes in the bottom of the planters for drainage and filling the bottom up with rocks to keep soil from sitting in any water.

How much rock should we place in the bottom?

Any other advice?
