DIY Replacement screen for fire bowl?

I bought a cheapo fire bowl for my mother in law last year, and the spark-screen cover has already rusted out.

I have found a few online, but the cheapeast is already half the cost of the fire bowl, and they are saying "ready to ship in 4-6 weeks" (seriously? who takes that long anymore?). It would make more sense to buy a whole new bowl.

Is it possible to make my own "hillbilly" version? I don't need anything that looks good Utility is the key word.

Is something like hardware cloth sturdy enough to withstand the heat of a fire? Are there other options anyone is aware of? I basically just need something to contain larger embers and those bits of larger ash that can float up and away on fire.
