Ditching

I'm digging a 1 ft. X 1 ft X60 ft ditch and my neighbour suggests that I hose it down to make digging easier. Before I make a muddy mess I want to get the experts' opinion on this.

Are you planning on using a ditcher? Or you planning on doing it the old fashioned way? A ditcher won't beed it, if doing by hand, I would wet it down a day ahead of time....but remember, it would still be tough. A ditcher is a pretty cheap tool to rent compared to back breaking labor.

I am digging by hand as I can't rent a machine where I live. The reason being is that the ground is too rocky for these machines.
