Deck & Patio -> Grade Level?

Hi folks,

I'm in the process of planning a deck and patio combination for my back yard, and wondering what to do in terms of the grade level for the two of them. The patio seems pretty straightforward - I will have 4 inches of gravel, 1.5 inches of sand and say 2 inch pavers so need to take 7.5 inches off the ground level.

What I'm wondering is what I should do underneath the deck. I was thinking I will add say 2" of gravel for drainage and weed control, but am not sure about the correct grade level. Should I take out 2" of dirt so that the gravel and patio will be level, just add 2" of gravel on top of existing grade under the deck or something else entirely?

A wooden deck on grade never works out.
It needs air flow under it to dry out or it rots.
No 2X's are direct ground contact rated.
How would you get wide enough joist to support the deck in that small a space?

Sorry, guess I should have been more clear - the deck is going to be about 3' above ground. I'm just thinking that I don't want plain old dirt underneath it and want the ground level transition from deck to patio to look nice.
