Do you have female dogs? If so, the nitrogen in the urine will turn the grass greener...or something like that. I've seen it - little circles of grass that grown greener and taller faster.

It`s not a big deal having dark green spots on the grass. it`s totally normal nothings wrong with it. B.t.w your lawn is quit beautiful and simple. :-)

Re: Dark green spots on lawn

I, too, have a question about this. I've lived in my current house for 3 years and have been working to improve a really lousy lawn. This spring and summer I began noticing these dark green spots. They're all over! There are more in my front yard than the back yard (front has constant sunlight / back yard is more shaded), but now I'm seeing them in the back too. This is the first year I've ever seen them.

Last fall I aerated using a plug pulling machine. Is it possible that when I fertilized in the spring more fertilizer was washed down into the holes?

Re: Dark green spots on lawn

What you have is isolated rootstocks of Kentucky bluegrass dispersed among other grass types. Because the lawn is thin, the bluegrass is not forming close mats.

Any suggestions on how to improve this?

Re: Dark green spots on lawn

Overseeding this fall with quality seed. Quality seeds contain parental grasses with high content of Kentucky bluegrass.
I have similar problems but in my case it is because of soil erosion (washes away the not so well-rooted grasses) and the fact that I don't water the lawn.
