cutting aspalt drive into pavers

Have recently moved into an established home where I have alarge area of asphalt which is now part of a garden area. I would like to make this area more decorative by cutting the asphalt into paver type squares with a 9-12 inch border which I would then fill with coloured pebbles Would I weaken the asphalt by cutting it into squares? Is it possible to do this, and how would I go about it. megs

How about putting these right over the asphalt - recycled rubber that looks like stone 18in x 18 in and is cushioned and movable - they clip in place or can be permanently sealed?

''bricks'' of asphalt would be weak and prone to crumbling, not a good idea
