Cool Plants, Shrubs, Trees

I'm trying to create a private garden area in a back yard about 10 yards by 15 yards for relaxing and entertaining.

Are there any particular plants, etc that would be great to have? Like a Japanese maple or something attractive?

Thanks.

Where do you live? Do you have a privacy goal? Do you have a shade goal? Maintenance?

I'm in the Baltimore area. The yard is somewhat shaded already. Privacy would be nice but I don't need tall shrubs to do that. Being a new homeowner, I have no idea what to expect for maintenance.

I kind of like this style but the plants would be around the border of a rectangle. Am imaging raised mulched beds with varied vegetation locking out the rest of the world. Maybe tucson gardenish?

you've got a ton of options in Maryland! Keep looking at pictures. Get some graph paper and draw a scale map. Play around with the design.

Plan. Don't make an impulse purchase. Plan some more.

Good luck and keep asking questions.
