Concrete Fire Pit

I've been searching around the net and this forum for a way to do a concrete fire pit. I've seen them on concretenetwork.com, but they give no indication on the type of concrete needed for such a design.

My plan is to make a form and use poured concrete for the fire pit surround and than place a steel ring in the middle of it with tamped gravel beneath for drainage and between the concrete and ring itself as well for about an inch or two all the way around the ring.

Do you think this is feasable? I was going to stain the concrete fire pit as well.
