Hello, I am interested in building a compost bin. Has anyone done this with great success? What do you recommend for a small time gardener starting a new garden? I would like to build it so critters from the neighboring woods don't find it easy to raid.
This is very low-tech, but it worked for me. I bought some large, cheap, cylindrical shaped, plastic garbage cans. I drilled a ton of small holes in the bottom and all over the sides for aeration, and used bungee cords to keep the lids on tightly. Every once in awhile I stirred up the compost, or added water if it got too dry. Sometimes I laid them on the ground and rolled them around to mix it all up. I set them right on top of the ground and threw in a very small amount of horse manure I got from a friend who owned horses. I had four of these and there were no problems with animals. It worked, but it took quite awhile to compost.
There are many better methods for this, but they typically involve more money than I wanted to spend, or a larger area than I could devote to it, or an ugly set-up that neither the neighbors nor I would want to look at. I kept these behind my garage in a nice neat row.
