Chainsaw Bar Oil

Is there a motor oil I can use in a pinch???

I don't know but, probably similar reasons as for not using motor oil in the transmission; it's different. Most chainsaws have had automatic oilers for a long time, so how is the pump going to handle motor oil? What about the seals? Will it stay on the bar, or is it going to simly be sprayed all over everything around you? What about lubricity? It seems like it would smoke pretty bad. Again, I don't know, but there are a few things that immediately come to mind.

I think in a pinch regular motor oil will do just fine, 10W30, 10W40. I've used it frequently.

My friend uses motor oil in his chain saw. I tell him not to. I don't know for certain that he's causing harm, but it seems likely -- bar oil is a lot thicker.

My father in law ties the bar oil to the pre-mix gasoline with a 3' rope -- then you're never in a pinch. Makes it easy to carry too -- hands free over the shoulder.

I've done it "in a pinch", but I wouldn't recommend it for full time use. Try to find a non-detergent 30 wt...but by the time you find that, you probably could've found bar oil.

You want to use a much thicker oil than motor oil. A 75w90 etc gear oil would work in a pinch but like others have said there is a reason they make specific bar oil

The pinch is being out of one and having the other on hand.

Been there many a time my friend...I doubt you'll burn it up on a one time deal, but as mentioned above, it could get a little messy.
