Can't start a B&S 8hp Chipper

Was working fine. Today, pulled on starter rope-very little resistance. Starter rope recoils properly. Thought maybe clutch stipped. Took off cover. Clutch fits over square metal end that sticks out through flywheel. Not loose. Held it by hand and pulled rope. The crank turned easily. don't think thats good! Is this something a backyard mech. can handle or is it off to the shop??

If the crank is turning, and there is no resistance whatever, you probably have a broken piston rod. That means a new engine.

However, I'm not convinced you don't have a problem with your recoil start. It could be that it's just not "engaging" when you pull it. So... Grab onto the squared end of the crankshaft with just your hand, and try to turn it. Does it turn without resistance? If so, refer to previous paragraph. If there is resistance, your recoil start/rope probably has a problem.

Solved the problem! Took off the recoil starter to access the square end on crank as instructed. Could turn it easily in BOTH directions. Not good. So then took off the clutch assembly and took the cover off. Two of the ball bearings had accumulated a bunch of crud on them. The junk kept them from rolling back and forth as they were supposed to. Cleaned up the clutch innnards and ball bearings with carb cleaner. Put back together and off she goes-running fine. Thanks for the tip on checking the crank end. Had a little brain lock I guess. As soon as it turned easily both ways, I knew the clutch wasn't engaging. Thanks again.
