black sheet plastic. How long will it last?

black plastic sheeting.
I was hoping to use it to cover the backyard of my rental home with this stuff only. no mulch.
The backyard is bare soil, and because of the lack of rainfall, very little grows except the occasional lone tall weed flower.
I'd like to keep the back yard barren.

How long does black plastic typically last exposed to direct sunlight everyday?

It's pretty damn cheap at $20 for 1000 sqft. If I can cover the yard and not have to hire a gardener to wack the weeds, it will be worth it.

That's just one silly idea.
2 mil. would be a waste of time, it's way to thin.
Think the yard looks bad now wait until you lay that plastic out.

1 year sounds good enough. Then I'll just rake it off.

not really concerned about how it looks.
Tenants don't use the backyard anyway.

The clear plastic version is the same price and could help sterilize the soil during the hot summer.

It will save me $70/month in gardening cost

How will you hold it down so a gust of wind doesn't pick it up?

Very good point Chuck! I would rather cover it, will last longer and be more secure.

16" insulation ties bent in half will hold it down.
So what happens when it rains with that stuff on the ground?
The water has to go some place, there's going to be ponds anywhere there's a low spot.

Two mil stuff will be useless in months. The six mil is good for a couple of years in that setting. Can be held down with patio blocks. Ron

The problem is going to be drainage after your occasional rains. Check with your county, before doing anything. They may prohibit such ground cover.
