Best work gloves for lumberjacking?

My oak tree suffered a lot of limb damage during recent snow storms. I went to Home Depot to get work gloves for sawing/chopping/pruning and was dazzled by the different kinds.
What is the best kind of work gloves for dealing with branches and logs and to protect against splinter/slivers?
Leather? Nitrate-coated?
Any advice is appreciated.
