Best MULCH ? too many choices ... (SF Bay Area)

We're about to lay down several yards of mulch in a section of our front yard that has some border hedging and a couple of trees. I think I understand that the best choice is to NOT put down any fabric-like weed barrier as it breaks down over time and eventually makes weed removal more of an issue. So an organic bed of mulch that is around 4" deep woyld probably be best (and not up against the tree trunks).

But my real question right now is which mulch is better for weed control? I've seen bark "chips" in small to large sizes. A common thing I see laid down in our area is that "shredded" mulch. It looks really nice but does it last or would we need to apply a top cover of it every year?

thanks -- great forum.

Why not use rubber mulch? Color-guaranteed for twelve years and no termite issues.

Organic mulches are best for the health of you plants. I would recommend a 3" layer of either shredded pine bark or shredded hardwood bark mulch. And you are right- no weed barrier.

So you were just looking for confirmation, not information.

I was looking for information, as well as validation .... not much interested in the whole "rubber" landscaping thing. Thanks though.
