Default Advice for learning how to make a stone walkway?

A pretty stone walkway would be my first choice for solving our driveway border problem. We have more time than $$$, and don't mind jobs that will take a lot of weekends to accomplish. I just need to find out if it's something we can handle ourselves...or not! If it's too hard or expensive, I'll have to become happy with a layer of little white rocks instead.

Does it take expensive equipment or back-breaking work to prepare ground surface for a walkway?
