57 or 89 gravel for french drain?

Heard two strong opinions from two friends. Wondering if this board has anything to offer as to which gravel size is appropriate for a home french drain.

You don't state where you live. 57 and 89 must be local terms for a gravel size, they have no meaning where I live, and probably no meaning to most of the people on this forum. If you define precisely what 57 and 89 means in terms of average size and percent fines, perhaps you will get a meaningful answer.
