Question

14" digging for normal brick pavers?

I decided to use red brick as my paver stone at my backyard.

Talked to a landscaper today. He said that as the red bricks are small, he highly sugguest to dig 14" and to have a deeper underlayment.

In my research so far, ppl usually dig 6"-8".

Is he right in the small brick and deeper dig or is he wrong? One thing to mention is that I am up in Quebec,Canada.

I've seen that much base recommended under some driveways that receive commercial traffic, but never for a patio. It's complete overkill in almost every application. The problem is most hardscaper's take a 2 hour ICPI class and then hold the book of guidelines they receive there as a bible, and can't think outside of that box/book.

Rather than my repeating myself, please see my comments here: red wall brick as ground paver in the yard?

The landscaper has a better idea then we will. The base depth has more factors then the size of the pavers. Underlying soil conditions effect how deep the underlayment should be as well. 6-8 inches is considered the norm but poor soil can require much more.
