Yet another Fireplace remodel....
Hi Guys,
First time poster, long time lurker... I have a wood burning fireplace that I'd like to remodel. Here is the picture.. ![]() I have removed the Stone on the outside only to reveal brick is underneath. I removed the wood mantle and the gyprock above it to reveal more brick. What do you think is under all this brick? Can it be removed? Last edited by adamavis; 10-26-2011 at 10:26 AM. |

Yet another Fireplace remodel....
I am not a fireplace expert but that does not look to me like brick you would want to remove. It looks like it is the support for the chimney.

Yet another Fireplace remodel....
I would leave that brick as a substrate for a natural thinstone veneer

Yet another Fireplace remodel....
You definitely don't want to remove the existing brick unless you want to build a new frame. The brick around the existing firebox adds some support, but more importantly helps with the draft of the smoke. Without the brick you could get smoke into the room.
You can easily apply thin stone veneer over the existing brick area. Additionally, you can add Durock to the existing brick if you want to widen out the fireplace. You have made good decision to remove the dated stone. Let us know how the finished project turns out. Below is a transformation of removing a very dated stone and replacing the stone with a new and more contemporary still stone.
