Window Measurements

Where do you get the window measurements if you need new windows?

Do you meausre from inside the jambs then add what both the jambs are; like 3/4 jambs, you would add 1 1/2''?

Same with the measurements for the height of the window?

I am going to install 3 windows in my house, all 3 are double hung and are the same measurement.

I have all the casing off 1 window, but on the bottom jamb, it is 1'' thick. And it looks like there is another piece under it that may go to the sill. This piece is about 1/4'' thick, it looks like it follows the window sills slope.

Also, where the top jamb meets the side jambs; the side jambs go a little over the top jamb. Do I meausre from the top of the side jamb? Or where the 2 jambs connect?

Sorry if this is confusing..

I pull off all of the casings & measure the RO -rough opening- to the studs
Then I pick a window based on the measured RO

At my house that meant buying larger (wider) windows as there were pockets on each side that had sash weights from old single pain windows

Ok, I will get a picture. The plaster covers the studs though.

Window Measurements

From outside jamb to outside jamb the window measures

2'-9 11/16'' x 4'-5 1/4''

Those measurements seem weird if I were to order them like that. There not custom at all, just double hung.

My instructor said measure with the jambs and it should fit right into place. He said you wont even need shims.

The RO's are:

34 7/8'' x 57 1/8'' or 2'-10 7/8'' x 4'- 9 1/8''
