Where to Start with My BASEMENT????

Ok..so im new here and would like some advice. Thanks

I live in Newmarket, Ontario Canada (keep in mind cold winters). We recently purchased a house here with a unfinished basement. Now that my daughter is getting to the crawling stage i need to start and finish my basement so she can have a place to play.

Now the problem. Where do i start??? As you can see the builders wall going down the stairs used 2 2x4 stacked sideways plus the 1/2 drywall giving my starting point kind of a messed up one because i cant use a standard 2x4 to frame. If i did my wall will stick out from the builders wall about 1/2. And on top of that my electrical box is right there at the bottom of the stairs.

How would you frame all this to make it look good with the existing builders wall and hide the panel box???

Also should i git rid of this crap insulation and get everything new???

That insulation looks like the kind they roll around the foundation and has a metal strip on the bottom you hilti to the wall. it would be a pain to rip it off and replace it with that panel being there. that insulation meets the min. code being below the frost line. how much space do you have from the foundation wall to the drywall? looks like pretty well the width of a 2x4? i'd frame up the wall with 1 5/8" steel studs then build a cabinet with 2 doors to cover the panel box. You could build the wall out with 2x4s or 2x3s but then you'd have a goofy looking wall that sticks out from the stair wall and could be problems for trying to bring couches and what not down the stairs.

How long is that wall with the panel? If it's not too long then just rip down the studs to 3" to match whats behind the drywall by the stairs. Then box in the panel like 'princelake' suggested.
Once you have that wall all in the same plane, then use regular studs to do the rest of the basement.
Good luck

First is that existing insulated part part concrete then insulation between studs or is it a blanket on the concrete part way down?
Then read these. (yes I stole them from GBR)

we build a mdf cabinet around the panel on every house we do. when its in a finished space its for aesthetic reasons. when in a mechanical room its because there are kids living in the house and its to reduce the chance of them poking around at things

No need to hurry. Little kids won't go to the basement to play by themselves so you have about 12 years until she will want to be as far from parents as possible.
