What are these called? How would you remove?

Are these called spindles? I would like to remove them. I will be painting and updating fixtures soon. Are these bearing any kind of load? Tips for what to put there?

yes spindles. Here is what i would do assuming there going in the garbage. Cut them in the middle now you can untwist or wiggle depending how there fastened.

They may be holding up the floor, or maybe bracing the walls. Sorry I jus couldn't resist. But I agree with Joe & 747
