Is it possible for a glass block window to crush the window sill? I am removing an old wood window from a Victorian house with balloon construction built in 1880. The window dimensions are 34x74. I estimated the glass alone should weigh 250 lbs and the mortar should be 50-100 lbs more. This window is on the second floor and there is a first floor window directly below it in the same stud bays.
Will framing in this configuration be enough to support the window?
A single vertical 2x4 4' long should buckle at more than 3300#. For a safety factor of four you can load it to 800#.
You can make a 1/10 scale model out of the same wood which should buckle at 34 to 70#.
