Water Tight Laundry Room (prevent water from spilling over into other rooms)

I am remodeling my laundry room in a 1932 house. It is in the basement and every now and again the drain clogs causing water to spill over onto the floor. I have had a few people come by to fix the problem but it is still happening - so while I work to fix this issue, I am going to also work to contain any water / minor flooding that may happen every now and again.

I am wondering what the best way to put up a sort of water tight seal around the room. I am looking at a product that is used in garages to keep out water and that may work, but i am wondering if anyone has done this and could help me find the best solution. I am also looking for this seal to go across a doorway as to avoid water getting out into my living room that way. (The laundry room is in a basement)

I guess you could put down a tarp. But I think the consensus will be that you HAVE GOT to fix the problem before spending any time and effort on your plan. Or you'll make a worse problem than you have now.

Garages are made to seal 'weather' out, not to make them 'waterproof'. The inside of your laundry room is not an exterior surface. I.e. It is NOT made to contain water in ANY way.

If this was my house I'd be visiting the laundromat before I did any more water damage to the house.

Keep in mind lots of water damage you can't see and that water finds the easiest path downhill.

Sorry. This sucks for you. Hope you get your drain problem fixed.

I bought a galvanized steel pan at home depot that sits under my washer and is about 3 inches deep. I also got a water sensor that beeps when it gets wet so i know to go check the laundry room.

I agree completely - I am currently using a laundromat for that reason.... I am just worried even after I get it fixed (they claim I just need to roto the drain) that it will happen again since they have roto'd the drain before.....

But I hear you - unless I solve the problem I am just delaying a larger problem down the line...

Putting in a tray connected to the drain will keep water off the floor. The clogged waste pipe, not withstanding.
If you have large trees over the underground waste pipe and the pipe is segmented clay pipe, you will need to clean these out on a regular timetable. In the last house I had, it was every 4 years, give or take. At the first sign of the slow drains we had it cleaned.
They sell a products that's supposed to kill the tree roots in the pipe. I don't know if the product works as advertised. Maybe someone else has experience with this product.

The tray will work IF it holds enough water and the alarm will work IF you're home (or within earshot) when it goes off. Solve the drain problem.....

IF its clogging the discharge, slip a leg from panty hose overt the washer discharge - it'll catch all the debris,,, IF the setup won't fit in the drain line, modify the drain w/large funnel - not pretty but its in the bsmt & will work !
