Vinyl Siding Getting Started Right

I will be siding my house with vinyl siding and the house has several features at different levels, such as a deck, porch etc. that cause me to struggle how to determine where the starter strip should begin. To make the siding match as I work upward is the challenge. Do I measure from the soffit down? Do i use a builders level or what should i use? This house is 2 1/2 story farmhouse.

I always pull numbers off the roofline (soffit) and pull a string line. All of my layout reference comes from that string.

A builders level is a fine tool in most cases, just don’t use one for siding on a crooked house.
