Veneer Brick Installation
I have some old brick that has been sliced to 1/2" thick. I am installing this on the lower 48" of my kitchen walls and backsplash.
The place where I purchased this has a recommended installation, which is not up to normal building practice.
The brick is over 100 years and very porous.
I already have hardibacker 500 for the installation. Kind of wishing I would have went with durock or some other cement board but I have the hardibacker.
1. What would be best thinset in the application? I have some verasabond leftover from a different job the other day. Not enough to do the whole job though.
2. What about grout? Whatever thinset I use probably has a recommendation but looking for your input.
3. What about sealer for the grout? I have read through the threads and this open to lots of debate.
4. What about sealer for the brick?
The link below is to a video that the seller of the brick has for recommended installation. Please provide thoughts on this. It looks easy and the appearance of the results are ceratainly satisfactory for what we are after.... but I want to get it good so this doesn't fall off.
If you don't want to see the video, they are basically using a mixture of thinset and grout together and then letting that ooze between the installation for the grout.

I'd think long and hard before using brick in a kitchen.
How would you ever clean it, between the duct and the grease in the air causing it to stick, and your working with a poris brick.:eek:
I have used brick in kitchen on walls with multiple ovens or even in some where there were woodburning fireplaces.
I too would think twice before using it too near a stove that is going to splatter grease on it.
I would follow whatever recommendations come with the brick for what is essentially grout, not mortar, in this situation. Check sites for other brick veneer products for clues.
And wherever you are going to put this in the kitchen, you are probably going to want to seal the surface? Others may have differing opinions.
