Vapour Barrier in Kitchen

I am involved in a kitchen renovation and have come across a situation regarding the vapor barrier. My house was built in 1988. The outside wall of my kitchen only has vapor barrier vertically up to where the bulkhead was (about 8" below ceiling). My new cabinets will not have a bulkhead but a a crown molding front hiding the plumbing/wiring behind it. The rim joist (with insulation) and 2nd story floor joists are exposed. I am going to replace the vapor barrier on the wall but am not sure what to do about tying it in with the 2nd story sub floor. Any suggestions?

Do your best to cut the vapour barrier around the joists and whatnot. Use staples and acoustical sealant to seal it to the subfloor.
