Using two different siding materials

I noticed some houses use hardi plank siding in the front and cheaper siding on the sides and rear (mostly t1-11). I have rough sawn plywood siding with trim boards. It gives the appearance of board and batton siding. I'm thinking about just replacing the front and one visible side of the house with hardi planks. I will then leave the rest of the siding alone. Does this decrease resale value? I'm thinking it could give the appearance of an unfinished project. Is it common practice to do something like this?

No it shouldnt decrease the value of your house. Around in my neck of the woods, houses are generally bricked just in the front then 3 sides siding. Some of the other houses are 3 sided brick with the back of the house vinyl siding.

Re-siding the whole house would be the better option but in the real world we do what we can afford to do and make the best of it.
Some high quality siding is always better than none!
