Unfinished room over a garage.

The garage measures 20ft x 18ft. front to back. A stair case runs side to side at the back. The garage is finished . I poked some holes in the finished ceiling and found 2x12 on 16inch centers. Also found a 2x6s stacked edge to edge, these run the 18ft span. Is this combo safe to finish the room. The room has 44inch knee walls where it meets the roof and rises to a flat 8ft ceiling, the end walls are rise up to the peak of the roof. This all came about because someone has a pooltable that weights in at 1000 lbs.

Sounds good, some pictures would be nice.
How wide are the rafters?
Did they make any storage areas in the knee walls?
Is there any windows?
What are your plans for the room?

2x6's stacked edge to edge makes no sense.
Sounds like a good, solid, room.

Stacked 2x6's won't cut it. The garage ceiling drywall requires Type X- fire-safe for a garage with living space above.

The side wall of the stairs (enclosed), and under the stairs, on the garage side requires same. A weather-stripped fire-door is required at garage/stairwell. A means of egress (window) is required in the new room, as well as light & ventilation, heat, smoke detector, insulation, etc. - check with your local AHJ.

17,000 dryer fires a year, when did you last clean the inside of the dryer near motor or the exhaust ducting?
