Tile over sheetrock
We've recently been doing some work on our 80s built house, including replacing a tub surround in one of the bathrooms. The original surround was three solid pieces of cultured marble. I don't do tile so I pay to have that work done, using a local crew I've been using for years for various stone and tile projects. My question is this: They smoothed the leftover glue and applied the thinset and tile directly onto the original sheetrock, which was in good condition. I was made aware later that this probably wasn't ideal and new backer board should have been used instead. Do I have cause to worry here? The grout has been sealed with a silicone sealant as well. If I should expect problems, how long until then?

as long as the tile backer stays dry, you will not have a problem.
lots of shower stalls have been this way for years.
Is it the best method? nope.

Be sure to keep it well caulked. Tile backer should have been used......

Is this tub only, or tub/shower combo?
