So you're saying you have a 4" wood backslash on the wall now? This is odd as that item is usually the same material as the counter. If this was added after the counter, and not attached to the counter, then remove it and tile the whole wall.
If you're not sure if it's mechanically connected, you would need to find out before you attempted it's removal as it could damage the counter.
