Studding out an interior block wall
 
Hello folks.

I am looking for an idea or two for studding out a block wall. It is and exterior wall on the inside of the house. It is a brick house. I did the gut and behind the plaster and wall board is red block and im guessing the outside of that is the brick.

I want to finish the wall with drywall but I don't really know where to begin with framing. The block is not true or flat at all and that would definiately mess up the studding. Shimming that out would probably be a nightmare.

My amature guess is to try and true it up with mortar so the studs will have a better base to be up against.

My reservation with that is the mortar not adhearing being applied in a skim coat. And it chipping off when the tapcons are driven in.

The wall will not be able to be traditionally studded due to the position of the windows and everything else in the room so using something other than a 2x4 will have to be the way I think. Im thinking of using a 2x4 width wise rather that length wise.

Any advice appreciated

Got a picture?
You can use 2 X 3's and just add jamb extentions around any doors or windows.
Going to have to do it this way any so you can run wires and install outlets.

There are no outlets on this wall which is handy.

How long is this wall?
Any door ways in the wall?
I think your going to find to meet modern codes your going to need at least one.

wall is 10'6" L. there is no door, only 2 windows centered on the wall.

it could be built with metal studs turned sideways or screw two metal studs together forming one metal stud to make it stronger, metal will be straighter than wood when turned sideways to build a wall, unless you can brace the wood stud to the concrete midway of the wall. How tall are your ceilings and what type of floor at the base of the wall?

Frame it with 2x4s or metal framing then trim out for the windows.

I will need insulation Im in Iowa.

@ hand drive the ceiling is just over 9' and I have wood flooring

I would use wooden 2x4 studs. They should NOT be attached to, or even touch, the block wall. Space it out about an inch. The bottom plate needs to be pressure treated lumber. For the insulation value you need, I'd consider spray foam.

So heres a recap of all of the information given in this thread and my interpretation:


1 Studding should not make any contact with masonry
2 R value of insulation should be R-19
3 vapor barrier should allow for moisture to escape

Setting the framing out off the wall is the way to go according to all asked.

My problem is if I set the 2x4's conventionally with the 1 1/2" side facing me that sets me at minimum of 3 and 1/2 inches off the wall.

The existing window does not extend out that far. Im wondering if that will present a problem when putting in new windows and when I will need to trim them. Or do you just install new trim to fit the new framing?

I am gathering that spray in insulation may be the way to go because Fiberglass insulation with a value of R 19 is 6 inches thick and apparently it isn't too good to compress the fiberglass.

I thank you all for your input. Who would of thought a "small" project would have so many considerations.
