Stopgap bathroom wall repair

For years my kids have taken showers and some of the water has leaked out the side of the curtain, hitting part of the wall down near the baseboards. Some of the water seeped through from time to time into the basement. There is a small portion of the wall, about 10 inches away from the tub (there's a 10 inch strip of the vinyl enclosure from the tub to that point) that was done in sheetrock, then painted, on which the surface is now peeling away exposing the cardboard layer of the wall board. In a couple of years, when my house is paid off, I want to totally redo this bathroom, but for now, I need a way to stopgap it and keep it from getting worse, if possible. Should I pull off the part that is peeling away and just cover that part with mud? Or is there a better temporary solution?

The only way you'll stop it from getting worse is to stop the water from getting out of the shower. This shouldn't be that difficult of a task.
Repairing the sheetrock should be a $20.00 expenditure. I'm not really following the waiting to pay off the house for this repair.
