standard height of handrails


what is the standard height for a staircase railing going down to the cellar. The stairs consist of eight steps no landing

standard height of handrails


Depending where your location is your code requirement might be different than others. Your best bet is to contact your local building department and ask them what the requirements for railing heights in your area are.

I have never seen a code, per se, but I usually consider the family members. 30" is a basic but if everyone in the house is 6'7", that will change. I generally ask the customer to walk to the stairs and show me what feels comfortable and take it from there. I do the same when installing shower diverters..I ask them to stand in the tub and show me what a comfortable level would be for them to change water temp

Nice thought on your part but there are codes that dictate some form of uniformity.

30" is WAY to low..........
I believe the International Residential Code (IRC) is 34-38" off the tread nose.
