Question

To soffit or not to soffit . . . ?

My wife and I are trying to decide whether or not to keep the soffit above our kitchen cabinets or use cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling. It seems to be a choice between "wasted space" and "virtually-useless space". It's only a 92" ceiling, so I can stand flat on the floor and place my palm flat on the ceiling, but my wife can't.

One of our concerns is that if we extend the cabinet doors all the way to the ceiling, (38" doors, as opposed to 30" doors), the cost will be somewhat higher for the sake of space thats hard to reach.

But there might be other considerations that we aren't thinking of. What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks all.
Artie

We had the same decision to make. Our's was an easy one as we wanted to get the most storage space possible, so going with the taller cabinet's was the answer.

Although the top shelf is not for everyday use, it is "storage space". Also, it looks more "modern" with the soffit removed. At the least, I would remove the soffit and do the smaller cabinet's with crown molding.

I wouldn't say it's useless space, it's more dead storage. One thing that might be a concern is if those soffits are actually hiding something like ductwork or plumbing.

Thanks for the replies folks. We've already removed the old soffit, and there's nothing up there but roach skeletons.

No soffit it is.
